Call a Heating Contractor If You See These Signs
Posted on: October 1, 2015
As a heating contractor, we are often asked by homeowners when they should replace their unit. This is understandable, given how well your HVAC is working will directly impact how comfortable you and your family are. A system that is not producing enough air, the right temperature, or is working intermittently can lead everyone in your home to race to put on a sweater, only to pull it off an hour later. If this sounds like you, give us a call. Otherwise, watch for a few of these signs that it is time to either fix or replace your unit.
You swear that your thermostat is lying to you.
Have you ever walked to the thermostat to see 73 degrees, only to swear it’s 80? In the winter, is it still saying 72 when your teeth are chattering? While it is easy to think the kids or your spouse may have just walked by and played a trick on you, there is a much better chance that your thermostat is no longer working correctly. They are not designed to last forever, and a broken or malfunctioning thermostat is one of the most common problems homeowners have with their HVAC unit. We will often recommend replacing it before buying a new unit. This is one way to troubleshoot the system, and if it works, you can save a great deal of money.
It is 15 years old.
Houses can last for hundreds of years when built correctly, but that does not mean everything inside your house will. Your HVAC unit may only last for 15 years. Typically, the air conditioning unit will need to be replaced first, but as a heating contractor, we will examine your entire system if you think you are having an issue. If you have an older unit, give us a call to schedule an inspection. As a heating contractor, we will let you know if it is time to replace all or a portion of it.
There is water, cracks, and soot around the unit.
Look around your furnace. If you see water leaking, a crack in any part of your unit, or soot at the base of it, give us a call. These are all signs that your unit needs to be replaced or that you have a problem with the heat exchange, which could possibly be repaired. We cannot know for sure until we inspect it.
Your bill is going up.
If your utility company has not increased their charges, your bill should stay the same as it did last year. The only exception is a strange weather system rolling in. If your bill has gone up for no apparent reason, this could be a sign your system is not functioning properly.
If you feel as though your home is no longer staying at a comfortable temperature or that you are always needing to run to the thermostat, give us a call. As a heating contractor, we can inspect your unit and diagnose the problem. We can then let you know whether you can get by with making repairs or if the entire unit needs to be replaced. Our crew is professional and experienced, so you can be confident that your family will become far more comfortable after we have serviced your HVAC unit.
