If you want the job done right, call a professional for your water heater repair. We know that it is tempting to do this yourself. The do-it-yourself trend has gotten increasingly popular and it is understandable why. With more tools available and blogs and YouTube videos demonstrating how to do repairs around the house, it can be tempting to give many projects a try.

Videos cannot show everything

Even the best YouTube video is not going to make up for years of experience and the camera angle is unlikely to capture all the details. For anyone that is trying to watch a YouTube video to coach them through a DIY project, it becomes clear very quickly what the cameraman is trying to show and what they have conveniently left out. This can lead to incredible amounts of frustration, especially if the video directions fall short on a critical step. At that point, the only option is to call for help or scramble to get information from other videos.

Things are not as easy as they appear

Even projects that seem simple in nature are often far more complicated than they initially appear. This is true for virtually all types of home repair. In part, this is because of Murphy’s law – If something can go wrong, it likely will.

It may not save any money

Trying to do a repair without the use of a professional may seem like a good idea for saving money but most of the time, it will not. This is because when homeowners try doing projects on their own they often spend more money on supplies and parts than is necessary and it may take significantly longer and more work to get the job done. If problems arise because of inexperience, additional expenses will be mounted onto the cost as well.

Plus, we encourage homeowners to consider how much money they make at their job. Then determine how many hours it might take to do the repair without help (double the amount of time, since things always take longer without experience). That income loss compared with the cost of parts is usually the same and sometimes even more than the cost of hiring a professional.

The risks

The risk of a water heater repair not being done correctly is that the water heater could leak all over the room it is in and potentially all over the house. This can lead to significant damage and incredible expense. In addition to water leaks, water and electricity do not mix so there is always a possibility for a dangerous situation becoming worse as water comes in contact with electricity. A third risk is that a homeowner could become injured in the repair. Working with a professional mitigates these risks and quite frankly it is a lot easier than tackling this project over the weekend.
